Because of the Goat's link with the legendary Xiezhi, goatherds and shepherds are often depicted in folklore as delivering justice for the common people through the possession of some magical talent or musical instrument. Such stories are particularly popular because of their heroes' humble status in the everyday world.

In the book we tell the Uygur folk tale of the orphan shepherd Aniz, shown here, who became an instrument of justice through his talent for playing the flute.
